The Land of Milk and Honey
OK, if you like ice cream, I have great news for you. Something WAAAYY better than ice cream has come to the booming metropolis of Baton Rouge, LA. I know, I know, you are likely gearing up to move along and check some other blog, because you spurn the idea that ANYTHING could be better than America’s beloved ice cream. That is, unless you have ever had the privilege to leave this country and travel to the great land of Italy.
If you have, then I have great news for you. If you haven’t, there is delicious surprise in store for you. (of course this is strictly contingent on you living here in BR) Baton Rouge has some new residents straight from the land o’ Caesar. Our Roman friends, hale from the Vatican City area of Rome and bring us good tidings of great joy: GELATO! Authentic Gelato! To say it’s like ice cream is insulting. But for lack of a better comparison, it’s like ice cream, only all natural, richer, creamier and crazily deliciouser! But don’t just take my word for it, here’s a little copy and paste action from a recent 225 Magazine article:
Just what the doctor ordered
Latte e Miele (Italian for milk and honey) is set to open this month on Highland Road, offering fresh-made gelato crafted daily from local ingredients.
Owner Dr. Corrado Di Martino is excited about sharing this authentic Italian treat in his adopted city. “Gelato doesn’t contain as much air [as commercial ice cream], so there is more intense flavor,” he says.
A 3.5 oz serving will contain 140-170 calories if milk-based, 150 calories if soy- or yogurt-based and 100 calories if fruit-based. Di Martino has a medical background and is passionate about his alternative dessert. “Besides being 10 times tastier, gelato is very low in fat,” he says.
He has brought in his nephew from Italy, Simone Romano, to make the gelato. “My nephew has been making gelato for 25 years – since he was 10 years old!” Di Marino gushes.

I dare all of you ice cream lovers to branch out, expand your horizons and try something new. And I challenge all of you in the know about Gelato to treat your taste buds to yummy, delicious perfection. We have to do our part to ensure that this treasure doesn’t ever go away! I highly recommend the Pistachio flavor. Of course, Chocolate, Limone and Strawberry are always winners too. If nothing else, roll over and hit up a few samples.
